Weight Management Programs Tailored to Your Individualized Health Needs and Goals

Individuals with overweight or obesity tend to have increased risk of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, elevated cholesterol levels, strokes, heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that more than 2 out of 5 U.S. adults have obesity. Not only are individuals with higher BMIs at risk of these conditions, but they also have the increased burden of being diagnosed with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. These conditions can take a physical and emotional toll on individuals and many face stigma and discrimination, shame, low self-esteem, and financial burdens amongst others.

The care team within Mary Rutan Weight Management Clinic wants to tailor your program to your individual burdens that you may feel while managing your diagnosis of obesity or overweight as well as the chronic conditions you may have alongside this diagnosis. We recognize that when it comes to obesity management treatment, it is not a one-size-fits-all approach and that people have variable health conditions at the same weight including unique body composition as well. Our program wants to tailor a sustainable and customizable management plan to help individuals with their metabolic health, chronic disease risks, and reduce body fat in relation to your total body weight.

Nutrition Education and Counseling, Lifestyle Behavior Goals, Meal Planning, GLP-1 Medication Management, and More!

The Mary Rutan Weight Management program offers options to help support your weight loss and treatment for long term success in managing your health.

Our goal is to help our patients achieve permanent weight loss through sustainable lifelong changes in diet, lifestyle behaviors, and physical movement. Our program offers individualized tools tailored to your weight loss or weight maintenance goals.

Our tools that can be utilized for the best goal outcome for you include:

  • Meeting with a registered dietitian on nutrition goals that are customized to your lifestyle and environment.
  • Medical oversight from a Doctorate Nurse Practitioner for enhanced support.
  • Weight loss medication management, if recommended, including GLP-1 injection education, counseling, and management.
  • The opportunity to work through emotional and mental health needs to inspire long term success with a clinical psychologist.
  • The opportunity to utilize high protein nutritional supplements to reach your nutritional needs to support weight maintenance.
  • A monthly opportunity for body composition evaluations to assess body fat loss vs muscle retention.
  • Working with an exercise specialist to develop an at home physical movement routine that works for your individual goals, strengths, and barriers.
  • Weekly weigh-ins for accountability and support.
  • Bi-weekly small group support groups for peer discussion and expert presentations.

Our weight management program offers 2 different pathways to choose from with access to all the above tools for both programs.

Medical Program

This program consists of:

  • A very low-calorie diet program that is followed for a short period of time (averages 3-6 months for most individuals).
  • Monthly medical monitoring through appointments, body composition evaluation, blood test, and physician oversight.
  • Utilizing high protein nutritional meal replacements (shakes, puddings, soups, and bars) as your sole source of nutrition to promote rapid, quick weight loss.
  • Working with staff on weight loss outcomes and goals that are sustainable long term through the adapting transition period back to balanced eating.

Lifestyle Program

This program consists of:

  • A low-calorie diet program that is less structured than the medical program that supports slower weight loss but still is effective for individuals.
  • Closer support and counseling from a registered dietitian.
  • Medical monitoring is not required.
  • Optional use of meal replacements, but these are not used as your sole source of nutrition.

After completion of either the Lifestyle Program or the Medical Program, patients may enter a Maintenance Program to maintain weight loss.

The Maintenance Program consists of:

  • Periodic follow ups with medical provider and/or dietitian to help with maintaining your weight lost.
  • Continuation of weekly weight check ins and accountability
  • Access to our support group
  • Access to a clinical psychologist and exercise specialist staff for continuing through behavior and lifestyle changes to maintain your changed behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Medical program and Lifestyle program safe?

Medical programs and Lifestyle programs are established, safe and effective treatments for obesity and have been around for decades.

What are the benefits of a Medical program or Lifestyle program?

A Medical program may allow you to lose about 3 to 5 pounds per week over the course of treatment. Such weight loss can improve medical conditions linked to obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The rapid weight loss is very motivating. Participants in a Medical program program can lose about 15% to 25% of their initial weight during the first 3 to 6 months. A Lifestyle program may allow you to lose 1 to 3 pounds per week over the course of treatment, and show similar improvements to medical conditions linked to obesity.

Do results last?

Our programs emphasize behavior change, exercise and lifestyle choices to sustain your healthy weight. Results will not last unless participants are willing to learn new habits through our individual counseling or group education classes. We also encourage participants to stay in our maintenance program for continued support. The really hard work begins once you reach goal weight.

What are the costs?

Both programs in the Weight Management Clinic will be billed to insurance. Insurance varies, depending on each individual plan. It is the participants' job to check insurance coverage before beginning the program. The Weight Management Clinic will provide a form during the information session that will give you steps of what to ask your insurance provider to confirm coverage. Costs of each program can be broken down during the information session.

How do I join the program?

The first step to joining our program is to attend a free individual information session with someone on our team. The information session will discuss the different programs we offer, what they entail, insurance coverage, and out-of-pocket expenses. To set this up, please contact the Weight Clinic at 937.599.7044 or weight.clinic@maryrutan.org.

Can I use GLP-1 medications within the program?

Yes! We will support and help with monitoring of side effects, appropriate dosing, and cost as best as we can. Utilizing GLP-1 medication during our program may support increased outcomes that are more sustainable to maintain.

Do you prescribe weight loss medications, including GLP-1 injections?

We do if it is medically advised and feasible for you. We do not prescribe them if it is not what you want to be part of your treatment plan due to medical concerns, financial concerns, or other worries about them.
