Our History
Mary Rutan Health came into existence as a gift from Rebecca R. Williams in 1916. Mrs. Williams' will specified that the property, deeded to the city of Bellefontaine, was to be used for a hospital and to be named in memory of her mother, Mary Rutan. Construction began, and in 1919 the doors opened to a 25-bed, two-floor hospital. Multiple expansions have occurred during the organization's 100-plus-year history, each time increasing services offered to the community.
