Weight Management

Weight management programs tailored to your unique needs & goals

The burdens of being overweight or obese are tremendous. Compared to normal weight individuals, those who are overweight tend to have more physical and emotional problems, face financial inequality, and feel socially isolated.

Obesity is a major health risk. It can have serious and costly consequences. The CDC reports that more than 3 in 5 Americans are overweight. A third of them are considered obese. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. Like other chronic diseases, obesity requires responsible, comprehensive, ongoing care and treatment.

Meal planning, weight management counseling, nutrition education & more

The Mary Rutan Weight Management Program offers you a new option for weight loss and treatment for long-term success. Our goal: to help our patients achieve permanent weight loss through lifelong changes in diet, behavior and physical activity. Our program offers customized meal plans tailored to your weight-loss goals, as well as education, ongoing medical oversight and the support you need for success.

We offer two different weight management programs within our clinic that emphasize behavior change, exercise and lifestyle choices. These include:

Medical program

A very low-calorie diet (Medical Program) is not just any diet that is low in calories. It is a special type of diet that replaces your meals with prepared formulas, often in the form of shakes, puddings, soups or bars. A Medical Program is used for a short time to promote relatively quick weight loss. The diet requires close care from our medical provider and is combined with education, support and individual counseling.

Program details:

  • Monthly medical monitoring - Blood Tests, Body Composition, Physician oversight
  • Weekly weigh-ins
  • Weekly education
  • Individual counseling with clinical psychologist
  • At home exercise program with exercise physiologist
  • Medical grade meal replacements
  • Accountability & team support

Lifestyle program

A low-calorie diet (Lifestyle Program) is an individualized plan that is less structured than a Medical Program, but has the same goals. Daily calories are higher than a Medical Program and weight loss is a little slower, but our education, support and counseling remain the same. The Lifestyle Program program does not require medical appointments throughout the course of treatment.

Program details:

  • 12-Week follow ups with a dietitian
  • Individualized nutrition plan
  • Weekly weigh-ins
  • Weekly education
  • Individual counseling with clinical psychologist
  • At home exercise program with exercise physiologist
  • Optional use of medical grade meal replacements
  • Accountability & team support

Frequently asked questions

Are the Medical Program and Lifestyle Program programs safe?

Medical Programs and Lifestyle Programs are established, safe and effective treatment for obesity and have been around for decades.

What are the benefits of a Medical Program or Lifestyle Program?

A Medical Program may allow you to lose about 3 to 5 pounds per week over the course of treatment. Such weight loss can improve medical conditions linked to obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The rapid weight loss is very motivating. Participants in a Medical Program program can lose about 15 to 25 percent of their initial weight during the first 3 to 6 months. An Lifestyle Program may allow you to lose 1 to 3 pounds per week over the course of treatment, and show similar improvements to medical conditions linked to obesity.

Do results last?

Our programs emphasize behavior change, exercise, and lifestyle choices to sustain your healthy weight. Results will not last unless participants are willing to learn new habits through our individual counseling or group education classes. We also encourage participants to stay in our maintenance program for continued support. The really hard work begins once you reach goal weight.

What are the costs?

Both programs in the Weight Management Clinic will be billed to insurance. Insurance varies depending on each individual plan. It is the participants' job to check insurance coverage before beginning the program. The Weight Clinic will provide a form during the information session that will give you steps of what to ask your insurance provider to confirm coverage. Costs of each program can be broken down during the information session.

How do I join the program?

The first step to joining our program is to attend a free individual information session with someone on our team. The information session will discuss the different programs we offer, what they entail, insurance coverage, and out-of-pocket expenses. To set this up, please contact the Weight Clinic at 937.599.7044 or weight.clinic@maryrutan.org.
