Neurological rehabilitation involves the examination and evaluation of individuals who have or are experiencing functional limitations due to a neurological event involving the brain or spinal cord. Our goals are focused primarily on optimizing our patient's rehabilitation potential in order to assist them with return to their daily tasks and duties. Treatment focuses on safety, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, walking/mobility, and transfers. Our therapists are also able to assess and make recommendations regarding the most appropriate assistant device such as a cane or walker to assist with improved safety and independence during ambulation. Jessica Anders, PT, C/NDT, CKTP, is certified in neuro-developmental treatment approach (C/NDT).
A few examples of neurological diagnoses that we may treat include those affected by:
- Strokes
- Trauma, such as brain and spinal cord injuries
- Degenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or ALS
Neurological conditions can cause changes in physical, cognitive and emotional abilities that impede a person from independently performing their daily activities related to work, school, parenting or leisure. Depending on the extent of the deficits and the needs and goals of the client, occupational therapy goals and services may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Further retraining in self-care skills and adapting tasks or environments, including the appropriate use of adaptive equipment to maximize the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) safely (e.g., bathing, dressing, functional mobility)
- Addressing ongoing deficits such as weakness, sensory loss, and cognitive or visual impairments that limit engagement in ADLs and instrumental ADLs (IADLS such as carrying groceries, cooking a meal, managing money and parenting)
- Training in community reintegration and modifying tasks or environments, including assessment of and training in the use of assistive technology to maximize independent engagement in IADLs
- Performing work-related task analysis and work site evaluations, and recommending modifications to the workplace; collaborating with educational facilities to facilitate return to school; working with the client on child-care-related tasks and adaptations for safe parenting responsibilities; and recommending adaptations to resume former leisure activities or develop new ones as feasible
- Developing coping strategies to support psychosocial health and well-being (including relaxation techniques, if appropriate)
- Teaching and promoting healthy lifestyle habits and routines
Our services
Physical therapy
Physical therapy treatment focuses on safety, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, walking/mobility, and transfers. Our therapists are also able to assess and make recommendations regarding the most appropriate assistive devices such as a cane or walker to assist with improved safety and independence during ambulation. We have certified therapists who provide LSVT BIG therapy for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Our team also has a physical therapist that is certified in the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Approach (C/NDT). Physical and occupational therapists collaborate to offer Delay the Disease community-based classes. This evidence-based fitness program consists of specialized group exercise classes for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other degenerative neurological conditions.

Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy treatment focuses on addressing deficits such as upper extremity limitation, weakness, sensory loss, and cognitive or visual impairment that limit participation in activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and functional mobility. Our skilled therapists are also involved with patients experiencing oculomotor and visual perceptual loss. Our occupational therapists are trained to complete clinical assessment to evaluate physical functioning, vision, perception, and processing abilities required for safe driving. Our therapists are also able to assess and make recommendations regarding assistive devices such as shower chairs, tub transfer benches, raised toilet seats, bedside commode and grab bars and adaptive equipment such as adaptive silverware, plates and cups, long handled sponges, long handled shoe horns, leg lifters, dressing stick, sock aids, button hooks, seat belt extenders, foam grip handles, elastic shoe laces, and reachers. We assist in facilitating instrumental ADLs such as carrying groceries, cooking a meal, managing money, and parenting. Our team is trained to perform work-related task analysis and recommend modifications to the home and workplace. We also have an LSVT BIG certified occupational therapist, and as mentioned above, collaborate with our physical therapy peers to provide the community-based Delay the Disease program.

Speech-language pathology
Speech therapy treatment focuses on maintaining or regaining cognitive function as it relates to attention, memory, problem solving, reasoning, and expressive communication. We develop specialized treatment plans for patients that are experiencing apraxia, dysarthria, or voice disorders. Our team is able to implement and facilitate the use of assistive devices for communication. We specialize in managing treatment plans for patients that are experiencing swallowing difficulty, including active oral and pharyngeal exercise plans, swallowing strategies, diet modifications, biofeedback and neuromuscular electrical stimulation. We provide LSVT LOUD therapy for patients with Parkinson's disease.
