Our Occupational Therapists are trained to complete a clinical assessment to evaluate vision, perception and processing abilities that could impact participation in daily occupations. Our visual screenings consist of completing standardized assessments for acuity and ocular motor function, summarizing findings to determine appropriate recommendations and treatment options.
The following diagnoses may be appropriate for a visual screening:
- Traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury
- Stroke
- Macular degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
Visual screening may include the following assessments:
- DTVP-A: Developmental Test of Visual Perception-Adolescent and Adult
- Measures different but interrelated visual-perceptual and visual-motor abilities
- Distinguishes between complex eye-hand or perceptual-motor action deficits
- MVPT-4: Motor Free Visual Perceptual Test
- Assessment of visual-perceptual skills commonly used in everyday activities
- Addresses five types of visual-perceptual abilities:
- Spatial Relationships
- Visual Discrimination
- Figure-ground
- Visual Closure
- Visual Memory
- Standardized assessment of oculomotor skills, visual fields, eye alignment, neglect and convergence
Occupational therapy treatment can be tailored to address deficits in eye strength/visual endurance, convergence/divergence, impaired binocular skills, neglect, and impaired visual fields to improve the patient's ability to participate in reading, driving, ADL skills, return to work, and leisure tasks.
Recommendations may include appropriate referrals to outside sources for further evaluation with an optometrist, ophthalmologist or neuro ophthalmologist as needed.
