Mary Rutan Hospital Therapy & Sports Medicine now offers a specialized group exercise program for people with Parkinson’s disease and other degenerative neurological conditions. Delay the Disease™ is an evidence-based fitness program designed to empower those living with Parkinson’s disease by optimizing their daily physical function and helping to delay the progression of their symptoms.

Our program will be led by Mary Rutan Hospital Physical Therapist Jessica Anders (PT, MPT, C/NDT, Certified LSVT BIG clinician) and Occupational Therapist Staci Bordner (OTR/L) as well as Occupational Therapy Assistant Danica Jarrell (COTA/L) who are all Delay the Disease™ Parkinson’s Fitness Program Certified Instructors.

This national wellness program is designed to retrain the mind and body. Participants report improvement in quality of life, regained ability to successfully manage aspects of their disease, and extended maintenance of independence. This program targets daily functional challenges and symptom-specific fitness. Exercise plans are adapted to fit all participants’ levels of ability.

This fitness program was designed by leading Parkinson’s fitness specialists David Zid (BA, ACE, APG), OhioHealth Director of Movement Disorder and Musculoskeletal Wellness, and Jackie Russell (RN, BSN, CNOR), Program Development Coordinator.

The program includes a pre-screening, 12 exercise classes, and a post-screening.

All classes will be instructed by licensed Mary Rutan Hospital Therapy and Sports Medicine therapists that are also certified Delay the Disease™ instructors. All classes will be individualized to meet the needs of all participants. Activities will target flexibility, strength, walking, balance, multi-tasking, and/or handwriting.

Please wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes. You may also want to bring a bottle of water.

The cost is $75. Payments should be made in full at the pre-screening.
