Bellefontaine, Ohio – The Ewing H. Crawfis Imaging Center will begin offering Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Procedures on Tuesday, June 25th. Stereotactic breast biopsies are minimally invasive and can provide patients with an accurate diagnosis without the discomfort and trauma of a surgical procedure. The procedure is a highly accurate outpatient procedure, after which the patient resumes normal activities. It requires a single small incision with no stitches and requires only a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the procedure. In the past, patients have had to travel outside of the community to the Columbus and Lima area for this biopsy procedure.
The primary role of a biopsy in managing breast disease is to determine whether an abnormality found in the breast tissue is benign or malignant, and if it is malignant, to categorize it by type and stage. Breast cancer, the most common cancer in women, accounts for one third of cancer diagnoses in women. Despite the alarming figures, the incidence of biopsied lesions diagnosed as cancerous is quite low.
Fortunately, 80 percent of biopsies result in a benign diagnosis. However, if cancer is present, it is crucial that you know the type and stage of the disease as early as possible. Through early detection and accurate diagnosis, more treatment options are available and a complete recovery is more likely.
This service will be offered at the Ewing H. Crawfis Imaging Center every other Tuesday, accommodating 5 patients per day. Dr. Pradeep Amesur will be the Radiologist performing the biopsy procedure.
